b-side: Make a Flag for Sea of Flags

About this event

Come and create a flag for Sea of Flags a collaborative outdoor installation celebrating identity, community, creativity and visibility on the Isle of Portland.

Using fabric, colour, text, symbols and pattern, you’ll be invited to make a flag that represents something about you: your identity, experiences, community, hopes or whatever you would like to proudly make visible.

Your finished flag will become part of a collective installation displayed during b-side festival from 10–13 September.

No previous art experience is needed, any ages welcome and all materials will be provided – though you’re welcome to bring anything along. Refreshments provided. Come along, experiment and add your voice to our growing sea of flags!

Flag making workshops are being held on:

Tuesday 11th August

Tuesday 18th August

Tuesday 25th August

Come to one or all 3!

This activity is part of b-side festival 2026 – That Other Place.

This year’s festival theme, “That Other Place,” draws inspiration from the Isle of Portland’s proud oddness, the now-defunct Portland Fair, and local resident David Palmer’s extraordinary Fair archives.

In 2026, b-side are bringing this to life through artists and communities bringing back their interpretation of the Fair alongside ambitious, year-long artist projects rooted in the island.

The Portland Fair was a hugely popular event for more than 200 years – part childhood rite, part otherworldly escape – That Other Place will reawaken the experience of it in a stranger, twistier, sideways sort of way.
